I was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) when I was 18. What a welcome into adulthood. 😕
At that time, I really didn’t fully understand what PCOS was and exactly how it would affect my life. Even now, I am still learning about the condition as I am being more open about my journey.
PCOS affected every arena of my life – physically, mentally, emotionally and even spiritually. I didn’t understand what I did to “become this way”, I really felt I had done something wrong. But despite the statistics saying 1 in 10 women have PCOS and it being much more prevalent in the Caribbean (me being from the wonderful country of Trinidad and Tobago), there is still a lot people don’t know about PCOS. Experts cannot put their finger on the direct cause (could be genetic and/or environmental factors) or a prescribed cure. Most women are just put on the birth control pill and metformin, and told to lose weight and they’d be fine.
Newsflash – We are NOT fine. 😐
Don’t get me wrong, a MAJOR part of managing our PCOS is in diet and exercise. HOWEVER, this takes A LOT of discipline and it’s not always easy, especially in this world that makes so many demands and has so many expectations of women.
Without the right mindset and support, PCOS can wreak havoc on women. Yet it is not recognised as a “disease” or major problem. It sadly is brushed off by others most times. So we women have to suffer silently, wishing and praying it was a curable illness. 😞
Becoming PCOS Positive
But I don’t want us to become victims to this condition. I want us to be champions. 💪
And it all starts with a positive attitude. 🙌
PCOS has now helped me to pivot to my purpose. My mission is to help women with PCOS deal with its symptoms with a positive attitude. It took me some time to get to that point but I want my experience to help you get to that place too. It is possible to have PCOS and still live your life to the fullest.
